Using a mechanized process the bark is removed from the tree and the remaining timber is then sent into a chipping machine. The next element of papermaking is debarking the tree. Due to their presence in North America it is not a stretch to assume that 3M could be finding their timber supply locally. Each of these three types of trees can be found scattered across the Northern Hemisphere. Though many different types of wood can be used, and even scraps from saw mills, three preferred types of wood are Fir, Birch and Spruce tree timber. Due to privacy concerns there is little to know research on 3M’s exact paper making formula but for the purpose of this paper we will assume they follow a standardized process. When thinking about the raw materials of paper it is easy to assume its merely manufactured wood, but when one dives deeper into the process it is clear wood is just one of many materials used to make paper.
